What is equine stress? Stress is caused by many things and individual animals have different stress levels. Stress can be caused by transport, boxing, events, new horses, new surroundings, loud noises, strange people, poor or changed diet, shoeing, dentistry, veterinary attendance, other horses leaving, loneliness, boredom, race days, jockeys - the list goes on. One horse's likes is another's dislikes.
When a horse is stressed, two fear hormones are secreted - adrenalin and nor adrenalin - these dramatically lift blood and body pH.
It is important, therefore, to protect the horse against stress, whilst at the same time keeping the immune response strong against disease.
