QUICKSCAN - Laser guided technology
A diagnostic & preventative tool for sound horse health
QuickScan has many uses about the stable yard, it can be used to read the temperature in the stables to help manage ventilation and reduce the incidence of respiratory disease. Silage and haylage can be checked for heat prior to purchase.
QuickScan is a robust, hand-held, non-contact infra red thermometer. QuickScan has a laser pointer, wherever the red dot can be seen, QuickScan gives the temperature at that point instantly in Centigrade or Fahrenheit.
QuickScan has a data store facility, clear screen and bright back lit LCD display.
Temperature Range
QuickScan has a temperature range of -20o Centigrade up to 270o Centigrade or -4o Fahrenheit up to 518 Fahrenheit.
QuickScan is accurate to +/- 1o Centigrade.
Power
QuickScan has an automatic power off facility. Battery powered - 9 volt 6 LR61 battery (included).
Using QuickScan
"As useful as thermography is in diagnosis, it is even more important in the early detection and prevention of injuries."To feel and detect abnormal heat by use of the human hand you need a difference of 5 to 7 degrees C between the problem area and the surrounding normal tissue.
Detecting Heat
Identifying and pin-pointing this increased level of heat can be very difficult, even when trying to compare to the opposite normal leg. This heat differential is an enormous and damaging difference that most people have not got the skill or ability to detect. A difference of as little as 2 degrees must warrant early attention, as it could easily develop into an incapacitating injury.
A recent study with QuickScan at the University of Minnesota was conducted looking at 45 Thoroughbreds in training, a group of vets were asked to examine the horses to identify potential injury areas. The analyses of each of the vets findings were compared, resulting in a 95% comparison accuracy. In addition, the QuickScan was further able to detect smaller problem areas and also key areas not identified by all the vets.
Hints to Better Scanning Results
It is best to wait two hours after exercise before scanning. In a normal horse the coronary band temperature is highest over the superficial blood vessel, as the foot is scanned down from the coronary band, the temperature will progressively drop.
Problems like Buck Shins and splints are easily detected much earlier when a regular scanning programme is adopted.
With tendon and ligament problems the structure may give a much higher reading. In such cases be sure to move in closer with QuickScan to pinpoint the main hotspots. A distance of 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 centimetres), is recommended, follow the laser mark carefully down the leg, watching the screen to see the actual temperature variations to quickly find the hotspot.
Dos and Don'ts
All areas to be scanned must be clean and free of mud to gain an accurate reading. Wet legs pose no problem, they do not alter readings, so it is not necessary to dry off areas to be scanned.
When dealing with a wrapped or cushioned leg it is best to wait a few minutes for the temperature to even out. The same applies for a horse that has been iced, but do remember it takes longer for a leg to warm up than a leg to cool down.
It should be noted that if Costeroid therapy has been previously used it will block readings for about a week.
QuickScan has been useful in some work done with products to alleviate the suffering caused by laminitis. Along with a therapy called Laminal, the thermometer was used to decide the right time to increase the system of exercise. This has resulted in less suffering and some very dramatic, rapid recoveries.
If the horse to be scanned has been rugged, remove the rug and then let the horse stand for about 20 minutes prior to scanning.
Hair length does not effect the accuracy of QuickScan, so winter coats do not create a problem. Using QuickScan is non invasive so it is quick and easy to use as a general body temperature check.
